On trends of AIDS and an estimate of the number of those infected with HIV in Japan

Increases in the numbers of those suffering from HIV infections or AIDS in Japan are examined, using data from the AIDS surveillance system established in May 1989. The results suggest that Japan is experiencing a period of exponential growth in the number of AIDS cases, similar to the European example during the 1980s. A new method for the estimation of the growth in the number of HIV-infected individuals is also presented and applied to the Japanese data. (SUMMARY IN ENG)
