Measuring blood pressure in children by the sphygmo-oscillographic method

In 230 children aged 3-14 years 293 measurements of the arterial blood pressure were taken by the sphygmooscillographic (SOG) method, by auscultation (RRO) method and by palpation (RRP). The analysis of the results showed that the SOG method gave readings on the average 4 mm Hg higher than the RRO method in the case of the systolic pressure, while the determinations of the diastolic and mean pressure by these two methods gave similar results. The SOG method made possible measurement of the arterial blood pressure in each case and in each examination. On the other hand, it was not possible to measure the arterial blood pressure by the RRO method in 8 percent of children aged 3-4 years and in some cases in older children. The SOG method may serve as an algorithm for microprocessor measurement of the arterial blood pressure based on oscillometry.
