Initial stage of extramedullary hemopoiesis in the liver of splenectomized and blood depleted mice was observed by transmission electron microscopy. Prior to the appearance of hemopoietic foci, lymphoid cells migrated to liver tissue. The cells in the sinusoids had pseudopodes that projected into Disse's space through the endothelial layer or attached to Kupffer cells. Some of the lymphoid cells were situated extrasinusoidally in Disse's spaces or surrounded by hepatocytes. A few lymphoid cells were lying across the endothelial cell layer of sinusoids, and several blastic cells were also observed in extrasinusoidal spaces. These observations suggest that blood depletion in splenectomized mice induces migration of small lymphoid cells to the liver. Some of these cells change into blastic cells that may develop hemopoietic foci.
