We evaluated 3 glucose reflectance meters .+-. Glucochek (Gk), Glucoscan (Gn), and Reflolux (Rx) using laboratory equipment as reference. Their correlations (r values) were : Gk = 0.85, Gn = 0.64, Rx = 0.88 (p < 0.001). If we divided the laboratory values into 3 groups as < 100, 100-200, and > 200 mg/dl, the r values were : Gk = 0.20, 0.68, 0.74, Gn = 0.23, 0.30, 0.43, Rx = 0.73, 0.78, 0.76. Using Gk, blood sugar can be checked by full- (Gk(1)) or half-width (Gk(1/2)) strips. Their correlations were similar (r = 0.86 and 0.85). The accuracy (within .+-. 20% of the laboratory value) of meters were : Gk(1) = 75%, Gk(1/2) = 55%, Gn = 60%, Rx = 80% and the differences between capillary whole blood and plasma glucose were : Gk = -16.85 .+-. 44.64, Gn = 16.75 .+-. 49.53, Rx = -14.60 .+-. 21.76 mg/dl. The difference in fasting state was greater than it in postmeal state except Gn. This study showed : (1) The blood sugar checked by Gk, and Rx were correlated well with the laboratory values. But if laboratory values < 100 mg/dl, only the data checked by Rx correlated well with them. (2) Using Gk, the data checked by full- or half-width strips had similar correlation with laboratory values but the latter had worse accuracy. (3) The difference between capillary whole blood and plasma glucose were negative in Gk and Rx but it was positive in Gn. These differences were greater in fasting state except those checked by Gn.
