Cholesterol levels in Christchurch blood donors

In non-fasting blood donors from less than 20 to 69 years old in Christchurch, New Zealand, serum cholesterol values (mean +or- s.d.) were in 520 men 6.08 +or- 1.29 and in 383 women 5.86 +or- 1.05 mmol/litre. Values are tabulated for 6 age groups in each sex. Of all donors 39% had more than 6.2 and 24% more than 6.7 mmol/litre, indicating a moderately and a markedly increased risk of coronary heart disease, respectively.
