We studied Doppler ultrasound signals in cerebral ischemia caused by carotid and vertebrobasilar artery diseases. We used Bi-Directional Doppler with 4 MHz frequency. The examination of the cerebral arterial system was related to different noninvasive approaches and the compression was made use of for finding the response of flows to it. Reversed flow in ophthalmic artery (internal nasal artery) is essential for carotid artery under study. Anbormalities of the opthalmic artery flow are significant for severe stenosis. Doppler ultrasound is useful in asymptomatic stenosis. In hypoplastic internal carotid results are similar with atherosclerotic occlusion. In aortic arch syndrome and subclavian steal syndrome Doppler ultrasound is of highest fidelity, showing also the collateral flow. Intracranial flow and carotid kinkings can be studied with the aid of compression tests and calculation of the index. Doppler ultrasound yields good results in controlling extra-intracranial anastomoses. In our experience, Doppler ultrasound is reliable in 100% of internal carotid occlusion and subclavian steal syndrome and about 70% in other circumstances.
