The prognostic significance of prolactin in prostate cancer

An investigation of 40 orchidectomized patients with cancer of the prostate with stge T3-T4 metastasizing tumours is presented. This investigation confirms that serum prolactin is of significance in cancer of the prostate as 87.5% of the patients who had raised or increasing serum prolacitn levels three months after orchidectomy had died 12 months postoperatively whereas only 6.5% of the patients with normal serum prolactin levels had died. The mechanism of the effect of prolactin and its significance for the prognosis and the employment of prolactin-inhibitors are discussed.
