Maxillary sinus carcinoma: a retrospective study

The authors report here the results obtained in 40 patients with maxillary sinus carcinoma (5=T2; 16=T3; 19=T4) treated, in the period between 1963 and 1985, with radiotherapy alone, or combined with surgery and/or chemotherapy. Overall survival (22.6% at 5 years), and survival according to the type of treatment have been evaluated. Patients treated with combined therapies have a longer survival compared to those treated with radiotherapy alone (four-year survival of 26.3% vs 16%; p=0.02). Surgery seems to improve results obtained in the context of multimodal treatment. Finally, survival in 11 patients treated with intra-arterial chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy has been analysed: it was of 31% at 42 months, thus confirming the importance of this procedure in maxillary sinus carcinoma.
