Coexistence of aspergillosis and squamous-cell carcinoma in the maxillary sinus proven by preoperative cytology

A case of coexisting Aspergillus infection and squamous-cell carcinoma is reported in a 56-yr-old woman. The diagnosis was established by cytological study of washings of the sinus and was confirmed by exploratory antrotomy. Culture of the excised materials yielded no fungal growth. Therapy consisting of surgical reventilation of the sinus and radiation therapy was successful and the patient recovered.
