Tick-borne encephalitis and encephalomeningits in the Lodz Province

An outbreak of tick-borne encephalitis occurred for the first time in Lodz Province, Poland, in 1970 among forest workers, and a virological and epidemiological survey was carried out in 1970 near Rogow. A total of 1030 examples of Ixodes ricinus (L.) were collected in the mixed forest of the area. One isolation of the virus of tick-borne encephalitis was isolated from 460 adults of I. ricinus in 17 pools and one from 570 nymphs in 10 pools. Thirteen cases of the disease were recorded in Lodz Province in 1970-72. The results indicate existence of a focus of tick-borne encephalitis in the Lodz province.
