Light microscopic, biomorphotic studies into intramural coronary arteries of the pygmy goat under special consideration of the tunica intima

The intramural coronary arteries in the papillary muscles of the right and left cardiac ventricle as also of the right and left ventricular wall of 19 clinically healthy pygmy goats of different age and both sexes were studied light microscopically. During the biomorphosis of the small vessels the most remarkable alterations were found at the tunica intima. The initial stage of an intimal thickening is represented by a broadening of the lamina propria intimae. Later on, the membrane elastica interna splits and smooth muscle cells become integrated, resulting in sometimes considerable narrowing of the arterial lumen. In the mean time, the strength of the media is remarkably diminished at sites with strongest intimal thickenings.
