This report is based on results from over 200 patients with chronic uraemia treated with a vegetarian diet containing energy, mainly as polysaccharides, and protein at about 35 kcal and 0.3 g/kg body weight daily, also fixed amounts of phosphorus, sodium and potassium, plus essential amino acids and keto analogues. Psychological, social and organic factors affecting compliance, notably fear of dialysis, are discussed. Urea values in blood and urine, allo-isoleucine in blood and clinical and biochemical indices of nutritional state, including thyroid hormones, are used to assess degree of compliance.
