To establsih the prevalence of the infection by hepatitis B virus (HBV) among dentists, the serological markers of that infection were studied in 91 dentists and in 62 dentist assistants from the Guipuzcoa province. Th prevalence of HBV markers was 27,4% among dentists and 9.6% among assistants. A remarkable finding was the increase in the indexes of infection with the years of professional activity, that reached 50% after 20 years in dentists. This findings suggest that immunoprophylaxis with HB vaccine should be recommended in these professionals.
