Three carp each weighing 850 g kept in a 100-litre aquarium were exposed to CuSO4 or paraquat at concentrations of 5 mg/litre or to the insecticide methidathion at 2 mg/litre. Severe tissue damage was caused by all three pesticides and was reflected in increased serum aminotransferase activities. Some enzyme activities decreased in response to paraquat, this effect being attributed to inhibitory effects of decomposition products. All pesticides caused prolonged stress, as reflected in increased epinephrine and blood sugar levels. Methidathion significantly reduced acetylcholinesterase activity, whereas CuSO4 and paraquat had only a short-term but nevertheless significant effect.
