Variability in the levels of substances with ABH group specificity in salivary secretion, in the region of la Jara (Toledo) : the secretor characteristic

Saliva from 257 blood donors with known ABO and Lewis phenotype was studied in order to detect glycoproteins of the ABH-secretor (83.27 percent of all samples) and non-secretor (16.73 percent) characters, the gene frequencies found for the alleles of the secretor locus being Se = 0.5910, se = 0.4090, which brings about figures similar to those of the European range, although that of 'se' is the lowest reported amongst the populations studied so far. The results of the mean concentration of these substances in the saliva of secretors confirm the hypothesis of an interaction between the phenotypic expression of the alleles pertaining to A1, A2, B, O, Lewis and secretor loci. Some variability was found for the levels of hydrosoluble glycoproteins depending of the ABO phenotype of red cells; thus, the levels of A and B are maximum in A1 and B subjects, respectively, whereas H substance showed gradations: O > A1 > A2 > B > A2B > A1B (the analysis of the variance confirmed the statistical significance of these differences).
