In view of (1) the absence of evidence that supplemental iodine yields beneficial effects in preventing or treating disease (other than endemic goiter, and then at very low levels), (2) the potential for iodine to cause frank iodism, and (3) because of the interest in iodine levels in milk and dairy products that may exceed human requirements, veterinarians should recommend that iodine supplementation excessively above the goiter-preventive concentration be avoided in lactating cows. Additionally, it would seem appropriate to carefully reexamine the question of the efficacy of iodine compounds for the prevention and treatment of foot rot, soft tissue lumpy jaw, and bronchitis-pneumonia in cattle.
