Neonatal neurobehavioral assessment and outcome

An attempt is made to assess neurobehavior in 30 normal full term neonates with equal number of asphyxiated full term neonates by applying Brazelton's NBAs with different aims and theoretical orientations. Using the Brazelton's scoring system, definite quantitative and qualitative behavioral differences have been shown in first 10 days of life. Some of the asphyxiated babies showed remarkable behavioral recovery by the end of one month demonstrating the plasticity of neonatal brain, while others showed persistent deviant neurobehavior beyond first month of life. All normal as well as asphyxiated infants were followed up to find out relationship between neurobehavior and later neurodevelopmental sequelae. The different behavioral items from the scale are reduced to four clusters based on circular sensorimotor organisation in order to point out neural functional complexes, related structures and mechanisms which may help in correlating deviant neurobehavior and developmental neurologic sequelae.
