The outcome of neonatal hepatitis after surgical intervention

A review of seven infants, 3 males and 4 females, aged 9 to 13 weeks (one exceptional case age 61 weeks) underwent laparatomy for a possibility of biliary atrasia was presented. All patient showed persistent jaundice, acholic stool and negative duodenal tubing test. At exploratory laparatomy the gall bladder had a lumen in all patients. None of the patients showed dilatation of the extrahepatic duct three out of seven patients showed a minute or small intra and extra hepatic biliary system which gradually enlarged in diameter by repeated flushing of urographine or normal saline. Follow up examination ranged from 8 months to 11 years showed that 6 out of 7 patients had normal liver function and normal growth and development. In the one exceptional case the disturbance of liver function had persisted and finally died of cirrhosis and liver failure at the age of 9 years.
