Changes in agglutination characteristics during artificially stimulated transition from follicular to luteal cell type in rat ovary

Changes in agglutination characteristics with Concanavalin A during follicular to luteal cell transformation have been studied in rat ovarian follicles using quantitative spectrophotometric method. Follicular and luteal cells were obtained from small and large follicles separated from PMSG-primed ovaries and corpora lutea at day 0 (day of ovulation) and day 2 of ovulation. The rate agglutination (.DELTA.A546/5 min) and total agglutination were significantly higher in the cells from large follicles as compared to those of small follicles. Except for the increase in the lag phase of luteal cells at day 2 of ovulation, other agglutination characteristics of luteal cells at day 0 and day 2 were not significantly different. However, the luteal cells showed decrease in agglutination rate and total agglutination level as compared to the cells of preovulatory follicles.
