The vaccine EV/76 and virulent 363 (1/1469) strains of Yersinia pestis were studied for their ability to use transferrin, lactoferrin, ferritin or hemin as the sole iron source in liquid iron-deficient media at acidic and neutral values of pH and at 28 and 37.degree.C. It was found that plague organisms could remove iron only from transferrin and hemin. Transferrin iron transport was influenced by the incubation temperature in both strains. This phenomenon was observed after the incubation at 28.degree.C and was not observed at 37.degree.C. Hemin was utilized by Y. pestis strains under all experimental conditions used.
