Effect of adrenal hormones on testis of the indian garden lizard Calotes versicolor

Effects of intramuscular injections of adrenaline and corticosterone separately in intact and thyroidectomized C. versicolor during quiescent, progressive, breeding and regressive phases were recorded on testis volume. Adrenaline induced regression of fully developed testis only of intact lizards and had no effect on testis of both intact and thyroidectomized lizards during quiescent, progressive, and regressive phases. Corticosterone administration significantly accelerated growth of developing testis of intact lizards but had no effect in thyroidectomized during progressive phase. Corticosterone, when administered during breeding phase, induced testicular regression in both intact and thyroidectomized lizards. However it had no effect during regressive and quiescent phases. These findings suggest that adrenal hormones are critically involved in the regulation of annual testis development cycle of C. versicolor.
