Development of parathyroid gland of the lizard, Calotes versicolor (Daudin)

The development of the parathyroid gland and thymus of the lizard, C. versicolor, is reported. The lizard possesses a single pair of parathyroids and 2 pairs of thymus lobes. The anterior thymus lobe develops as a sole derivative of pharyngeal pouch III. The parathyroid and the posterior thymus lobe develop as derivatives of the ventral and dorsal anlagens, respectively, of pharyngeal pouch IV. It is shown for the 1st time that the parathyroid of a lizard processing a single pair of these glands develops from pouch IV.
