A possible role of fish preparation 'Hentak' in urolithiasis in Manipur--an experimental study

Hentak, which is prepared from small fish, shrimps and stems of Colocasia esculenta and is a popular dish in Manipur, India, where the incidence of urolithiasis is high, had moisture 22.6, protein 41.7, calcium 10.8, magnesium 1.0 and oxalic acid 1.2%. Groups of 7 growing rats were given a stock diet without or with 2% hentak for 50 days. Urine was sampled every 10 days. Uric acid in blood of rats given hentak was increased significantly and magnesium was decreased. In urine of rats given hentak oxalic acid was increased significantly on day 30, uric acid and phosphorus on days 10, 30 and 40, and hydroxyproline and magnesium on days 30, 40 and 50. Calcium in urine did not differ between the groups.
