All of 92 Gambian children under 10 years screened by ELISA for antibodies to HTLV-III were seronegative. 38 had acute Plasmodium falciparum malaria, the rest had low grade chronic malaria or were partially protected from malaria. 5 Caucasians with acute P. falciparum malaria were also negative for antibodies to HTLV-III.
