Temperature induced changes in brush border lactase and alkaline phosphatase activities of developing rat intestine

A biphasic Arrhenius plot for lactase with a break point around 26.degree. was obtained in microvillus membranes from 7 day old pups but a straight line was observed in weaned animals. The pattern of Arrhenius curve for alkaline phosphatase (AP) was opposite to that of lactase under these conditions. Cortisone treatment to suckling rats precociously induced adult type alterations in Arrhenius plot for these enzymes. Thyroxine administration modified temperature induced changes in AP without affecting the lactase activity. These findings indicate age related differences in the orientation of lactase and AP in microvillus membranes of rat intestine.
