Modifications of several indices of metabolism under the effect of a contraceptive agent administered orally

While 20 women took Infecundine (2.5 mg norethynodrel and .1 mg mestranol, combined) for 8 weeks, their serum was assayed for lipids, cholesterol, fatty acids, alpha-amino-nitrogen, and sugar, before and after 4 and 8 weeks. Mean cholesterol rose from 256 to 340 mg% after 4 weeks, (p less than .01), then fell to 266 after 8 weeks; the maximum individual increase was 100%. Total lipid increased from 506 to 541 mg% (n.s.) after 5 weeks, and fell to 510 after 8 weeks. Alpha-amino-nitrogen rose from 6.46 to 7.56 mg% (p less than .05) at 4 weeks, and fell to 6.26 after 8 weeks. Sugar rose from 95.4 to 100.6 after 4 weeks (n.s.), and declined to 83.1 after 8 weeks. The fatty acids analyzed by gas liquid chromatography did not differ remarkably.
