In a previous work, one of the authors (V. O. Guida) has studied the antagonistic effect of some sporulated bacilli against various pathogenic bacteria. In a survey of a large number oi bacterial samples, three strains of Bacillus cereus and one strain of Bacillus polymyxa were selected in order to study their antibacterial activity in the management of acute and chronic intestinal infections. Previously, such a strains were undergoing several animais tests (by oral and intramuscular routes) in order to ascertain its toxicity. It was shown that toxic symptoms were not apparente even when high doses were adrninistered. Eighty three patients were chosen and submitted to treatment. All were suffering from acute and chronic enterocolopathies, and the examination of the feces shown the following results: - 15 Shigellas, 6 Salmonellas, 15 Paracoli, 1 Alcaligenes fwcalis, 2 Proteus vulgaris e 37 Escherichia coli not serologically typecl. as per Kauffman scheme. There were 7 cases with no feces examination. In all patients the symptoms varying from a few months to many years. In the cases studied the administration of Bacillus cereus or Bacillus polymyxa; was followed by a complete remission of the toxic symptoms. Actually ali patients are completely symptorns free (meteorism, abdominal distress, diarrhea, etc.) Detailed and repeated analysis of the feces have showns the total elimination of the pathogenic organisms. It was thought that probably the Bacillus cereus and the Bacillus polymyxa would act against the pathogenic bacteria by ineans of their antibiotics and enzymes. The latters would interfere with the protein and hydrocarbonate metabolism, avoiding the occurrence of toxic products.
