A brief overview of the historical development of the agricultural sector in China, focusing on land ownership policies, is presented, set within the context of promoting national food security. This is followed by a review of the present food security situation in China, examining government policies which have been implemented to strengthen food production and supply. In the process of rapid economic growth and the improvement of average living standards, the discussion on food security in China has been broadened from a basic needs strategy into a wider context of food consumption patterns with improved levels of animal protein supply. The final section considers the future prospects for food security in China.
