The use of Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis in the biological control of blackflies in Czechoslovakia

Spores of lyophilized B. thuringiensis subsp. israelensis produced by Roger Bellon and Moskytur (Czechoslovakia) in aqueous suspension were tested for simuliid control in 2 streams in Czechoslovakia. At temperatures of >10 degrees C, mortality of blackfly larvae (including Prosimulium tomosvaryi, Cnetha verna [Simulium vernum] and Odagmia ornata [Simulium ornatum]) were noted within 48 h of application, and reached 95-100% at sites up to 400 m downstream. At 700 m downstream, mortality rates were only 20-40% (but at this site a large proportion of old larvae was present). A site 1000 m downstream was not affected. In one of the streams, relatively rapid recolonization by the blackflies occurred. At temperatures <2 degrees C, the efficacy of the treatment was drastically impaired.
