The elderly in rural Orissa: alone in distress

It is noted that increased poverty and economic stress in rural Orissa, India, is likely to erode the traditional family care and support system for the elderly in general, and for women in particular. The existing patriarchal family system in Orissa permits limited access for elderly women to property rights, which further compounds their difficulty in obtaining enough income for survival. Data are drawn from a survey of 1 107 households from five villages surveyed in the months of September 1989 and February 1990.
