A comparison is presented of the socioeconomic status of male- and female-headed households, focusing on the differences in resources (time and money) between these household groups in Orissa, India. Data are presented from 1 107 households (which covers 6 033 individuals) from five villages in Bolangir district where agriculture is rainfall dependent as there are no artificial irrigation facilities . Issues discussed are: characteristics of female-headship in Orissa; poverty and female headship; differential resource use; and children's access to social services (health care, education, and child welfare outcomes).
