Isolation of bacteria of the Haemophilus-Histophilus (HH) group from the genital tracts of cattle

Culture on Haemophilus somnus agar of 266 bull semen samples from three cattle breeding centres yielded the organism from four semen samples in two centres. Of 180 preputial washings and 16 vaginal washings submitted for routine tests two preputial washings were positive. The over-all isolation rate of 1.3% from healthy animals may have underestimated the true infection rate, as 48% of samples were overgrown by Proteus; although this problem was later overcome by adding chloral hydrate. Although no disease was reported in any of the positive animals, a series of ten isolates of H. somnus was associated with reproductive disorders such as orchitis, vaginal discharge and abortion.
