Snails of medical importance in Southeast Asia. TROPMED Technical Group

A review, prepared in 1985 at a meeting of workers from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and the World Health Organization, of the taxonomy, distribution, ecology, role as intermediate hosts for trematodes and nematodes, and control of the 45 species of snails of medical importance (in 23 genera and 7 families), mainly in the 4 countries represented is given. Special attention is given to the Pomatiopsid intermediate hosts (Oncomelania, Robertsiella and Tricula spp.) of Schistosoma japonicum, and the control of Oncomelania in the Philippines by improved water management and land use. Recommendations for future research are included.
