The comparative response of tadpole melanophores to organophosphorus (Dimethoate 0.05 ppm) and chlorinated (BHC 1 ppm) insecticide was determined under laboratory conditions. The static tests for 21 days revealed important changes in the melanophores: 1 increased branching, 2. significant (p < 0.001) increase in the mean area, 3. reduction of melanin contents, 4. distinct branches in the malanosome processes, 5. BHC induced comparatively greater dichotomous branching, 6. melanosomic limbs were thick in Dimethoate exposed tadpoles whereas in BHC treated animals limbs were thin and had bifid and trifid tips.
