Qualitative and quantitative study of a DVi variant with anti-D in the serum

A D-positive woman developing anti-D after multiple antigenic stimuli (twelve pregnancies plus seven transfusions) is presented. The patient's red cells were identified as DIV variant of the TIP-pett's classification. Quantitative agglutination against anti-D with autoanalyzer showed that this DIV variant needed 32 times as much molecules as D red cells to yield a 50 per cent agglutination. The family study showed all the patient's children to be D-positive, and three of them are carriers of the DIV variant. The usefulness of anti-D prophylaxis is such cases is discussed.
