Five different methods of measurement were used to estimate the obesity of 90 children. The results showed that the height standard weight method was the most suitable one. The age mean weight plus 2 X S.D. method gave a too low estimate, while the weight index method tended to over-estimate. To estimate body fatness from height and weight is not suitable for children, while subcutaneous fat thickness is a simple, practical and reliable method for evaluation body fatness. It is hoped that a national criterion for evaluating obesity and a standard method for estimating body fatness will soon be worked out.
