Effect of long-term tobacco smoking on functional changes of the adrenergic system

In a group of 50 men with coronary artery disease and normal resting electrocardiographic tracings and in 20 healthy men the exercise test was carried out on a cycle ergometer determining the values of the systolic and diastolic arterial blood pressure, and changes in the plasma levels of noradrenaline and adrenaline. The effect of chronic tobacco smoking on these values was evaluated. The mean plasma level of noradrenaline and adrenaline afted exercise and their changes during exercise were significantly higher in subjects with coronary disease. No significant effect of smoking was observed on the plasma level of catecholamines and on the systolic and diastolic blood pressure before and after exercise, and on their changes during the exercise in patients with coronary artery disease and in the group of healthy subjects.
