An overview is presented on the nutritional implications following proctocolectomy (PC) and ileal reservoir construction (IRC), and includes specific recommendations for postoperative dietary management. High fiber diets were used successfully in 7 patients (2 having familial polyposis, 2 ulcerative colitis, and 3 Crohn's colitis; ages, 13-60) following PC and IRC, with the absence of food intolerances noted in other studies. This diet was found to improve uncontrolled diarrhea and stool formation, was well tolerated, and did not result in nutritional deficiencies.(wz)
