Sweat electrolyte content is known to increase with age and to rise in cases of cystic fi-brosis of the pancreas. A study of some 1,000 Israeli children, divided into groups according to age, ethnic background and state of health showed that the level of sweat chlorides is influenced by the age of the child as well as by his ethnic background, but to a much smaller extent than in cystic fibrosis. The variations due to ethnic origin were significant in the groups of children from 7 to 14 years old. The sweat chlorides were lower in Ashkenazi children than in those of Sephardi background who generally have a darker skin complexion. The sweat chlorides of infants under the age of 2 yrs. suffering from diseases other than cystic fibrosis did not differ significantly from those of normal infants.
