Uganda: lessons for AIDS control in Africa

This article describes the prevalence, incidence and social aspects of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) in Uganda, and discusses the AIDS prevention strategies which helped decline the number of AIDS cases in this country. These strategies which aim to prevent sexual transmission of AIDS include the promotion of abstinence, fidelity, sex education and use of condoms. Although sex education and condom use received negative remarks from several social and religious groups, they proved to be effective in increasing awareness about AIDS, changing sexual risk behaviour and preventing AIDS transmission.
