Fibrobronchoscopy conducted in 4115 patients with chronic nonspecific pulmonary diseases (CNPD) has revealed mainly catarrhal endobronchitis resistant to antibacterial therapy. Examination of bronchial mucosa obtained by fibrobronchoscopy demonstrated viral infection in most of the patients. The process exacerbated in 41 of 60 patients in the presence of concomitant acute viral respiratory infections. The dynamic follow up of 19 patients confirmed the presence of chronic viral infection with a long-term persistence of viral antigens (predominantly respiratory syncytial) in bronchial columnar epithelium. These findings prompted the development of the method for combined therapy of viral infection using interferon, anti-measles or anti-influenza gamma-globulin, a 5 per cent solution of aminocaproic acid and other agents which are used either for irrigation of the nose, ear or throat or administered locally. This treatment made it possible to arrest the development of viral infection and to achieve stable remission in patients with CNPD.
