Influence of protein deficiency in the diet on the absorption of vitamin A in the alimentary tract

Wistar rats, 300 in all, from 6 weeks old were fed for 3 weeks on a semi-synthetic diet with 10% protein from whole egg powder or a similar diet with the egg replaced by wheat starch and soya bean oil, protein-free. At the end of the feeding period all were given, after 18 h without food, 10 000 mu g vitamin A as retinyl palmitate in oil or water. Blood and liver were obtained from 0.5 to 8 h later.
