Relevance of species specific filarial antigens for diagnosis

Research on species-specific filarial antigens suitable for diagnosis is reviewed. Using various models (Brugia malayi, B. pahangi and Litomosoides carinii in jirds, Mastomys or rats, Dipetalonema viteae in jirds, Mastomys and hamsters, B. timori in jirds, Wuchereria kalimantani and W. bancrofti in leaf monkeys) to obtain antigenic material, radiolabelling techniques were used to study surface antigens. No species-specific antigens have been demonstrated for Brugia spp.; instead many common and cross-reactive surface antigens were observed. Work with excretory/secretory/metabolic antigens has so far failed to show any species-specific components.
