The case histories of a 32-year-old Swiss man and his 31-year-old wife, who visited Cameroon from 24 December 1985 to 10 January 1986, are reported. Both patients had taken prophylactic doses (400 mg/week) of amodiaquine until January 17th, and subsequently presented with malaria complicated by thrombocytopenia on January 23rd and 24th respectively. They were treated with quinine and had an uneventful recovery.
