A case of polycystic hydatid disease (caused by E. vogeli) in a tapper of rubber trees from the State of Acre, Brazil, is reported. The most relevant clinical data were pain, increased abdominal volume caused by palpable painful masses, fever and poor clinical condition. Laboratory tests showed anaemia, eosinophilia, hypoalbuminaemia, hypergammaglobulinaemia and increased plasma levels of alkaline phosphatase. Computerized tomography revealed diffuse cysts throughout the peritoneal cavity up to the pelvis, and inside the liver, pancreas and spleen. Treatment with albendazole at 10 mg/kg bwt for 6 months caused complete regression of disease. This is a most encouraging case report of a rubber tapper in Brazil with Echinococcus vogeli infection of the liver who was treated with albendazole for 6 months. As well as clinical improvement, reduction in palpable masses and considerable response on repeat computerized tomography scan was seen.D.L.
