Foetal pulmonary maturation in pregnancy induced hypertension

Amniotic fluid samples (92) obtained from women with pregnancy induced hypertension (76 mild, 16 severe) were evaluated for foetal pulmonary maturation and prediction of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). Pulmonary maturation was accelerated in severe cases of pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH) whereas mild cases showed a normal pattern. RDS occurred in 3 mild and one patient of severe PIH and was linked with prematurity and birth asphyxia. A L/S ratio of 2.0 or greater guaranteed absence of the risk of developing RDS whereas values less than 2.0 were of limited predictive value.
