Monensin poisoning in horses

A pelleted feed containing 280 mg monensin per kg was inadvertently fed to 20 horses and a donkey of a circus in the morning. Soon afterwards some of the horses had developed colic, and within 24 h six horses and the donkey had died. Five ill survivors, admitted to the authors' clinic, showed sweating, tachycardia, myoglobinuria and gastrointestinal disorders (with intestinal atony and gastric dilation). They all died or had to be destroyed, despite attempted treatment.
