Use of monensin sodium against Toxoplasma

To control Toxoplasma abortion in ewes, levels of 150 mg monensin/kg feed have been given, as ewes were only being given 100 g of concentrate daily. This has led to reports of feed refusal and signs of toxicity in the ewes. Feed should not contain more than 30 mg monensin/kg. It is suggested that feed is an inappropriate route of administration of monensin if higher amounts of inclusion are required because of low concentrate intake in early pregnancy. In preliminary trials with feed blocks containing 200 mg monensin/kg block, toxicity was not a problem.
