Isolated sphenoid sinus aspergillosis: a case report

A case in a 47-yr-old man is reported. The patient presented with severe frontal headache and photophobia for 5 days prior to admission. Sinus X-rays and computer assisted tomography scans of the skull showed the right sphenoid sinus completely filled by a radiation dense tissue mass with no bony destruction. An exploration of the sphenoid sinus and subsequent histological and microbiological analysis of biopsy material, indicated the mass to be caused by Aspergillus sp. infection. The patient was successfully treated by a second operation to increase aeration and drainage of the sinus.
