Efficacy of the nadolol-bendroflumethiazide combination in the treatment of arterial hypertension

The above study was aimed at testing the efficacy and tolerability of a pharmacological combination of the beta-blocking agent nadolol and the thiazide diuretic bendroflumethiazide. The trial was carried out in 20 patients (11 males, 9 females) aged 47 to 76 (average 59,9) with mild or moderate hypertension (WHO classes 1 and 2). Mean pressure values were already significantly reduced in the 2nd week of treatment and at the end of the planned 6-week-period both in the supine and standing positions; heart rate was also significantly reduced (but never fell below 45 beats/min). Side effects, if present at all, were those typical for the two drugs used, and were always bland so that withdrawal of treatment was never indicated.
